Le marché des lices

The Lices Market

The rendez-vous of Breton gastronomy

For four centuries now and most likely more, every Saturday from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM all Rennes converges in great numbers at the Lices square. They walk, basket in hand and taste buds wide awake, to meet about 300 producers, artisans, craftsmen, and vendors.

The second largest market in France

The latter, are there at the crack of dawn, to set up their richly coloured stalls filled with local produce: fish, seafood and shellfish, meat and charcuterie, fruits and vegetables, cheese and butter, flowers, jams, honey, bread, cider … and of course the traditional sausage galette

Around the two Martenot covered markets, there are no less than 10,000 buyers coming to stock up for the week. Rennes is proud to be host the second largest market in France which brings all the region’s best in terms of gastronomy together in this neighbourhood, distinguished by its remarkable architecture. The whole town hangs around the Lices; the night owls and early risers, the bourgeois and the bobos, grannies and their carts, star chefs and lovers of fast good. Take the pulse of the city over coffee on a terrace, capturing this atmosphere unique to major markets and take in the incredible culinary richness of Brittany, at the Lices Market!
