Rennes Opera House

If the architecture of Rennes’ Opera House seems surprising to us today, just imagine the astonishment of the locals when it was unveiled in 1836. It certainly merits a visit? Charles Millardet’s design for the building known as “The Theatre” reflects the 18th-century trend for curved architecture. The convex façade, protected by muses carved by François Lanno, hides many more original features on the inside, such as stalls on the first floor rather than in their usual position on the ground floor. The famous 44 steps to reach them made the headlines at the time! Although it is one of France’s smallest opera houses, it boasts outstanding interior decoration and a rich and varied programme each season.
